John attended a Microsoft event in Cardiff yesterday for Server 2012.

It was a day long session involving labs and demonstrations of the new facilities and technology in Windows Server 2012. Upshot is that John came back fired up and excited by what he had seen and done.

Lots of new virtualization technology on show and although Microsoft might not bill it as this it looks like Server 2012 is aimed to be a VMWare killer. Live migration, offsite replication, clustering all built-in and costing nothing extra. Vsphere licences anyone?

The other highlights were the ease of making clusters out of the box and the impressive inbuilt data deduplication. This feature is going to save some businesses a bucket load of money on new storage capacities can be improved by up to 70%.

As it happened one of our clients was also at the event and they ran some tests on their data and are looking to save over 30% on storage.

The other noticeable feature on display, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has been to a Microsoft event over the last couple of years, is that Powershell was much in evidence. We can even manage servers remotely now with Powershell.
