No, I’m not talking about flux capacitors and the 1989 movie Back to the Future Part II – where Marty is sent into the future to 2015 – but the operating system that refuses to die.

Who would have guessed that one of our first projects of 2015 is to mess around with MS-DOS 6.22, 1994 vintage?

One of our customers has a number of CNC based saws and the controllers for three of them use industrial PCs still running MS-DOS. Given that the saws cost upward of £80K a piece and have many years life left in them this gives us a bit of a headache. Coming to replace the PC that is connected to the CNC saws either means continuing to run Windows XP and NetBEUI (remember that?) on new hardware or remembering how to hack MS-DOS and setup the TCP/IP stack.

Even my grey hairs are struggling to remember how to optimise MS-DOS memory management and load drivers.

Happy New Year!
